Lipikola Type Foundry’s annual conference unites Bengali type designers, researchers, and international experts to advance the discussion around Bengali script and typography.

As part of this ongoing effort, the Annual Bengali Typography Conference “Lipikola TypeTalk 2026” is set to take place on Monday, September 7, 2026. Lipikola TypeTalk is an initiative for discussion, knowledge exchange, and building awareness among the new generation of designers around Bengali typefaces, typography, and script. This year’s event will feature discussions on the history of Bengali type, current practices, the aesthetics and technology of type design, research, and the potential of Bengali type in an international context. The event will bring together the country’s prominent type designers, researchers, and typography-related figures, along with individuals working on Bengali type internationally. Renowned type designer and researcher Jacob Thomas, and typography expert and Deputy Editor of The New Age, Abu Zar Md. Akkas, will speak as keynote speakers at this year’s event. Also speaking will be Maksudur Rahman, Associate Professor in the Graphic Design Department of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University; renowned artists and type designers Anisuzzaman Sohel and Shahinur Rahman; Tanbin Islam Siam, one of the developers of the Avro team; Omi Azad, developer of the Ekushey Project; and many other distinguished individuals. Bengali script is an important visible element of the Bengali language and culture. However, regular and institutional discussion on Bengali type design and typography is still relatively limited. Speakers including artists, researchers and academics on Saturday said that the book publishing suffers for lack of quality Bangla text types.

They made the remarks at an event titled ‘Lipikola TypeTalk: Discussing Bangla Typefaces’ at Bishwa Sahitya Kendra organised to mark the launch of 12 Bangladesh fonts by Lipikola on the first anniversary of the digital type foundry.
বাংলা লিপির সৌন্দর্য, ঐতিহ্য ও সৃজনশীলতার চর্চা নিয়ে লিপিকলার প্রথম বর্ষপূর্তি উপলক্ষে বিশেষ আলোচনা সভা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়েছে। শনিবার (১৬ আগস্ট) সন্ধ্যায় বিশ্বসাহিত্য কেন্দ্রে ‘লিপিকলা টাইপটক : ডিসকাসিং বাংলা টাইপফেস’শিরোনামে এ বিশেষ আলোচনা অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।স্বাগত বক্তব্যে লিপিকলার ফাউন্ডার ও সিইও কাজী যুবাইর মাহমুদ জানান, ‘লিপিকলা টাইপ ফাউন্ড্রি’ পেরিয়েছে এক বছরের যাত্রা। এই এক বছরে আমরা ১২টি টাইপফেস নিয়ে ১২টি বাংলা ফন্ট নির্মাণ করেছি, যেগুলো বাংলা লেখার দৃশ্যমান রূপকে নতুন মাত্রা দেবে বলে আমাদের বিশ্বাস। তিনি বলেন, ‘বাংলা বারো মাসের নামে একসঙ্গে ১২টি ফন্ট প্রকাশ করেছি আমরা। যে ফন্টগুলি লিপিকলার অফিসিয়াল ওয়েবসাইট www.lipikola.com থেকে ডাউনলোড করা যাবে। এর আগে গত বছর জুলাই গণঅভ্যুত্থানের দিনগুলিতে লিপিকলার ‘দ্রোহ’ ফন্ট যেভাবে দেশব্যাপী আন্দোলন, দেয়াললিখন আর পোস্টারে পোস্টারে জায়গা করে নিয়েছিল, সেই ঘটনা থেকে আমরা অনুপ্রাণিত হয়েছি।’ ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের গ্রাফিক ডিজাইন বিভাগের সহযোগী অধ্যাপক মাকসুদুর রহমান বাংলা টাইপফেসের ঐতিহাসিক বিকাশ, ডিজিটাল যুগে টাইপফেসের প্রয়োজনীয়তা এবং অক্ষরের গঠনশৈলী নিয়ে তাত্ত্বিক ও একাডেমিক আলোচনা উপস্থাপন করেন। নিউএইজের ডেপুটি এডিটর আবু জার মো. আক্কাস বাংলা ফন্টের বিবর্তন, নকশা, টাইপোগ্রাফি ও ব্যবহার নিয়ে তাত্ত্বিক আলোচনা করেন। তিনি টাইপফেস ও ফন্টের অভিজ্ঞতা ও গবেষণার নানা দিক তুলে ধরেন। পাশাপাশি নতুন বাংলা টাইপফেসের সম্ভাবনা এবং ডিজিটাল মাধ্যমে এর বিস্তারের বিষয়েও আলোকপাত করেন। অনুষ্ঠানে লিপিকলার নতুন বারোটি ফন্ট ও বাংলা লিপিকলার কয়েকশো বছরের ইতিহাস, বিবর্তন ও নকশা নিয়ে বিশেষ ডকুমেন্টারি প্রদর্শন করা হয়। অন্যান্য আলোচকের মধ্যে ছিলেন বিশিষ্ট শিল্পী ও টাইপফেস ডিজাইনার আনিসুজ্জামান সোহেল, বেঙ্গলবুকস-কিন্ডারবুকস এর প্রকল্পপ্রধান, শিল্পী ও টাইপফেস ডিজাইনার আজহার ফরহাদ, ইবিএলআইসিটি প্রকল্পের পরামর্শক মামুন অর রশিদ এবং ২০২৫-এ অভ্র কিবোর্ডের জন্য একুশে পদকপ্রাপ্ত, বাংলা সিয়াম রুপালী ও কালপুরুষ ফন্টের নির্মাতা তানবিন ইসলাম সিয়াম। অনুষ্ঠানটি সঞ্চালনা করেন শিল্পী ও গবেষক সিলভিয়া নাজনীন। লিপিকলার বর্ষপূর্তি, বাংলা টাইপফেস নিয়ে আলোচনা সভা Read from Daily Shomoyer Alo

The design process for these fonts started many years ago, with most typefaces taking a decade or more of ongoing research and refinement. Throughout the years, we have explored and improved our understanding of typeface structure and character. Last year, during the July movement, we celebrated a milestone in Bengali type design by releasing ‘Droho,’ the first rebellious Bengali typeface, which introduced Lipikola to the public. Since then, we have revisited our earlier designs and created new ones, leading to the release of this series of 12 fonts named after the 12 months of the Bengali calendar.
